Internship, a training program known as a work internship, is organized by institutions or companies for individuals who want to learn or gain work experience in a specific company or institution. Internships always hold value and benefits in any field because through this program, participants will gain insights into the business processes of a company, which will be valuable when applying for jobs in the future.

Nyimas Salma, a Mathematics student from the 2017 cohort, is one of the students who participated in an internship at Tokopedia Surabaya through the Tokopedia Youth Batch 9 program, held from June to October 2021 in a hybrid format (WFH and Work From Café). Nyimas, along with 30 other participants from various majors, joined as youth in the City Seller Performance division, tasked with monitoring the weekly sales growth rates of stores in Surabaya selected to participate in the Rebate Plan program.

In addition to the above activities, participants in this program also assisted in managing Zoom meetings with 15 participating stores in the Rebate Program Plan to discuss sales performance over the week and to discuss plans to improve sales to help stores reach the targets set by Tokopedia. This was done because these 15 stores had been selected to place their products on the Surabaya Choice Store page and receive other selected discounts to increase their store exposure, as well as receive ‘free shipping’ subsidies for stores that achieved the sales targets set by Tokopedia.

Nyimas’s other activities in the Tokopedia Youth program included curating products based on weekly sales, ratings, stock updates, and product photo displays suitable for the ‘Surabaya Choice Store’ page on the Tokopedia marketplace. She also curated and categorized products to be displayed in local campaigns such as the ID Card page, Flash Sale, and Tap in Habitual page on Tokopedia. Lastly, she provided training to new sellers who joined Tokopedia to increase transactions.

Through these various experiences, Nyimas admitted to gaining a better understanding of one of Tokopedia’s business processes, namely the rebate program plan. Nyimas also learned how Tokopedia maximizes the potential of local MSMEs per city (Surabaya) to be more recognized by buyers in Surabaya, thus supporting the local economy. Through this program, Nyimas also learned how to read sales bank data to utilize it so that products selected according to specific filters can be displayed on the buyer’s page.

Armed with the experience and knowledge gained from the Tokopedia Youth program, especially regarding the Rebate Program Plan, Nyimas was accepted as a Management Trainee SAP at Telkomsigma, one of Telkom’s BUMN subsidiaries engaged in the IT & Service Company field. Nyimas’s active participation in various internship programs and student exchange programs made it easier for her to find employment. Moreover, the job opportunity at Telkomsigma was her first job application that immediately yielded results.

Nyimas hopes that in the future, the Tokopedia Youth program can further facilitate students who want to learn to work in the super-agile Startup world like Tokopedia because it is a valuable asset for students when they graduate and start looking for jobs.

Furthermore, Nyimas advises, “Regardless of the field we will work in later in the world of work, it all starts with understanding the business processes of the company, starting from understanding what the company does, how a company delivers products from upstream to downstream, from the production process to reaching consumers, especially in the Mathematics program itself, where several courses discuss logistics such as Operations Research.”

Nyimas’s activities also support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

Goal 8: Support inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.
