The Mathematics Study Program, Faculty of Science and Technology at Universitas Airlangga, organized a practical lecture on Wednesday, November 16, 2022. The lecture took place in the Mathematics computer laboratory and centered on the topic “Application of Artificial Neural Networks in Image and Text Classification Using PyTorch”. This event featured guest speaker Syahrul Hamdani, M.Si, an esteemed alumnus of the Mathematics study program class of 2012, currently serving as a Data Scientist. Alongside addressing the specified topics, Syahrul shared insightful experiences derived from his tenure as an alumnus engaged in the field of data science.

Syahrul’s involvement in data science spans from late 2018 to the present day. In his capacity as a data scientist, Syahrul assumes the critical role of predicting potential outcomes consequential to the company’s operations using available data. He provides strategic recommendations to enable the company to undertake actions that foster future profitability. Syahrul also reflected on his academic journey, highlighting the importance of balancing academic pursuits with active engagement in non-academic spheres, particularly organizational roles and committee memberships. During his academic tenure, Syahrul demonstrated remarkable involvement in the Mathematics Student Association (HIMATIKA) and spearheaded various innovative initiatives such as Red Day and music communities, which continue to thrive. Additionally, Syahrul’s active participation in diverse projects has yielded significant contributions to the professional landscape. He urges current students to prioritize engagement in non-academic activities, alongside meeting administrative requirements.

Reflecting on the practical lecture, Syahrul emphasized its substantial benefits for participants and expressed hope for its frequent recurrence. He further advocated for the inclusion of alumni representing diverse professional domains in such practitioner lectures, thereby enriching the learning experiences of the current student body.
