Entering the era of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia, where the situation shows no signs of abating, most activities and events have shifted to online or virtual platforms. However, this did not hinder the spirit of the Mathematics students at the Faculty of Science and Technology, UNAIR, to continue learning, participating in competitions, and achieving various accomplishments.

One such student is Wanwha Sonia Putri Artha Soetjianto, a Mathematics student from the 2018 batch, who clinched the 1st Prize in the HALAL PATIKA 2021 Scientific Paper Competition with her work titled “Hydrolyzed Collagen From Fermented Chicken Feet Skin As a Substitute for Pig Gelatin in Moisturizers To Prevent Premature Aging,” supervised by Bu Asri Bekti (Mathematics Lecturer).

In completing their work, Wanwha Sonia and her team set deadlines aligned with the Mentoring Class Community Achievement assignment deadlines. They formulated the title and abstract, completed by May 8, 2021, and proceeded to draft the content (chapters 1-5) by May 25, 2021. The work was eventually completed on time. After receiving critiques and suggestions from mentors, the team attempted to submit their work to the Scientific Paper Competition (LKTI) organized by LPPOM MUI DIY. They sought intensive guidance from one of the Community Achievement mentors to make improvements to their work. Their work was finalized and submitted on July 12, 2021. One month later, Wanwha Sonia and her team received the announcement that they had made it to the finals, ultimately winning the 1st Prize.

This competition, conducted via Zoom meetings, was participated in by 123 teams from across Indonesia. The participants were university students, with each university allowed to send more than one team (1-3 students). The competition involved a selection process starting from the preliminary round, assessment of works, and the final round. Six teams, including those from UNAIR, USU, ITB, Gunadarma University, and UIN Sunan Kalijaga, successfully advanced to the final round.

“At that time, our work was both mine and Dita’s (my teammate) first attempt, so we didn’t expect to win the title, and I am very grateful to all parties who supported and were involved in the preparation of our work,” Wanwha Sonia expressed her feelings about this victory.

Wanwha and her team’s participation in this competition also supports the SDGs program:

Goal 3. Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.

Goal 9. Building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation.

Wow, how amazing! Hopefully, the story of Wanwha Sonia and her team’s participation in the HALAL PATIKA LKTI competition can inspire and benefit all of us! See you in another inspiring story!
