Mathematics Department of Unair Explains the Applications of Calculus and Its Geometric Aspects
On Saturday (March 6), the Mathematics Department of Universitas Airlangga (Unair) participated as a guest speaker in an online Guest Lecture event hosted by Universitas Billfath. The lecture, themed “The Applications of Calculus and Its Geometric Aspects,” was presented by Dr. Eridani, M.Si., a lecturer from Unair’s Mathematics Department. Approximately 85 participants attended the event, including those from Universitas Billfath and other institutions such as ITB, ITS, IKIP PGRI Bojonegoro, Universitas PGRI Ronggolawe Tuban, Universitas Qomaruddin Gresik, Institut Teknologi Kalimantan, and UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. The event began with an opening speech by the Dean of FMIPA Universitas Billfath, Wahib, S.Ag., S.Si., M.Pd., followed by a prayer. The presentation was moderated by the Head of the Mathematics Program at Universitas Billfath, Aris Alfan, S.Si., M.Si.
The guest lecture was divided into two sessions: the presentation session and the Q&A session. During his presentation, Dr. Eridani explained how theorems in calculus are used to illustrate concepts related to geometry. He also discussed the application of calculus in everyday life. “With calculus, teachers can not only convey the material but also motivate students to be enthusiastic about learning mathematics by demonstrating its various applications in daily life,” he said. Participants from different academic backgrounds enlivened the Q&A session with questions about the use of calculus in their respective fields. Mr. Aris, the moderator and person in charge of the event, noted that participants from non-mathematics departments at Billfath were curious about why they were also required to study calculus. The guest lecture aimed to address these questions and motivate students to learn calculus.
The event, which lasted nearly two hours starting at 8:00 AM WIB, is part of a series of guest lectures initiated by a collaboration between the Mathematics Department of Unair and the Mathematics Program at Universitas Billfath. These lectures are planned to be held monthly, covering topics relevant to students’ needs. The first series of guest lectures can be viewed on YouTube at the link https://intip.in/KultamSeri1. This activity also serves as a form of community service by the lecturers of the Mathematics Department of Unair to help develop new higher education institutions within the Unair environment. It is hoped that similar activities will continue, involving other universities.
