Following the success of the workshops on the first two days, the 8th International Conference and Workshop on Basic and Applied Sciences (ICOWOBAS) continued with a two-day conference, attended by participants from various scientific backgrounds relevant to the scope of ICOWOBAS. The participants, hailing from both domestic and international institutions, included keynote speakers, invited speakers, presenters, and participants. The conference opened with the Indonesian national anthem, followed by welcome remarks from UNAIR Rector, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nasih, SE., M.T., Ak., CMA., ICOWOBAS members Assist. Prof. Dr. Idris Hadi Salih from Tishk International University (TIU), Prof. Dr. Jawhar Fattah Saeed from Salahaddin University Erbil (SUE), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zaiton Abdul Majid from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), and ICOWOBAS 2021 Chair and Vice Dean 1 of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) UNAIR, Dr. Eridani, M.Si.
The keynote speaker session on the first day took place in the main Zoom room, featuring Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ramzan from Bahria University-Pakistan and Prof. Dr. Bunsho Ohtani from Hokkaido University-Japan, moderated by Dr. Sheela Chandren, Ph.D., from UTM. The event continued with parallel sessions featuring invited speakers in four breakout rooms, categorized by disciplines: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. The Mathematics Department hosted three speakers for this session: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharidan Shafie and Prof. Dr. Fadhilah Yusof from UTM, and Dr. Nur Chamidah from UNAIR’s Statistics Program.
The presentations by these three speakers covered various Mathematics and Statistics topics, including “Convection flow of Carreau fluid over a stretching cylinder” by Dr. Sharidan, “Time-Varying Copula” by Dr. Fadhilah, and “Designing Standard Growth Chart Based on Weight-For-Age Z-Score of Children in East Java Using Least-Square Spline Estimator” by Dr. Nur Chamidah. The session, moderated by Dr. Widarto from UNAIR’s Mathematics Program, proceeded smoothly and concluded with a discussion segment.
Following the invited speaker session, the conference continued with parallel sessions where each presenter showcased their research findings. The parallel sessions were divided into four segments: one on the first day and three on the second day. The Mathematics field alone was divided into three rooms, encompassing research groups in Mathematics, Statistics, and Information Systems. The Mathematics sessions mainly featured pure mathematics topics such as Algebra, Analysis, and Graph Theory, alongside applied mathematics topics related to mathematical modeling.
The ICOWOBAS Conference provided numerous benefits, primarily serving as a platform for researchers and academics to share and exchange ideas about current research developments, particularly in the field of Mathematics. Looking ahead, UNAIR’s Mathematics Program aims to continue advancing research and actively participating in international forums to enhance the quality and quantity of research within the program.
