The third agenda of the Video Conferencing with Universitas Airlangga (Decota) activities in the Mathematics Study Program was realized in the form of a guest lecture titled “Fuzzy Sets and Systems,” featuring Ali Ahmadian, Ph.D. from Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria, Italy. This event, organized by the Research Operations and Computation (ROK) Group, took place on Saturday, October 9, 2021, via Zoom.
The event opened with remarks from Dr. Fatmawati, M.Si., Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Science and Technology. In her speech, Dr. Fatmawati expressed the hope that this activity would benefit students, lecturers, and the Mathematics Study Program. “We hope that the guest lecture can provide insights not only for students but also for lecturers. Additionally, we hope that this collaboration can continue in the future through research partnerships or other forms of cooperation,” she stated.
In response, Ali Ahmadian, Ph.D. said, “I am very open to those who want to learn more about Fuzzy sets and systems or wish to collaborate on research in this field.”
Dr. Ahmadian’s presentation began with an explanation of several applications of Fuzzy logic in modeling, control, and optimization. “Fuzzy logic deals with ambiguity and vagueness,” he explained. He further illustrated the concept by comparing the speed of two animals: a slow snail and a fast cheetah. If “slow” is valued at 0 and “fast” at 1, there should be an animal with a speed between the snail and the cheetah, valued between 0 and 1. Assessing traits in binary conditions, such as slow (0) and fast (1), is known as crisp logic, whereas considering values in between [0,1] is referred to as fuzzy logic.
The guest lecture, moderated by Mathematics lecturer Asri Bekti Pratiwi, M.Si., lasted for two hours and concluded with a Q&A session. The recording of this event can be viewed on YouTube Matematika Official at the link Guest Lecture Fuzzy.
