The Mathematics Study Program at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Airlangga (FST UNAIR), recently organized a Guest Lecture titled ‘Algebra in Real Life,’ focusing on the practical applications of algebra in everyday scenarios. The lecture, held on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, featured Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) as the keynote speaker.

This on-site event, hosted in the faculty meeting room, attracted over 40 participants, including students and faculty members, with a particular emphasis on those enrolled in the Abstract Algebra course.

Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin commenced the lecture by posing the question ‘What is Mathematics?’ She then proceeded to elucidate the diverse domains wherein mathematical principles find relevance. Emphasizing the integral role of mathematics in daily life, Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin highlighted its applications in fundamental activities such as commerce, cooking, and artistic endeavours, where concepts like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, geometry, and matrices play crucial roles.

Delving deeper into the subject matter, Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin underscored the significance of matrices and Fibonacci numbers in representing various real-world phenomena.

Following the presentation, an interactive session ensued, wherein participants engaged in discussions and queries. The event concluded with the distribution of mementos by Dr. Herry Suprajitno, MSi., the Head of the Mathematics Department, followed by a group photograph.

During the event, Prof. Dr. Nor Haniza Sarmin extended an invitation for student exchange programs at UTM Malaysia, particularly targeting UNAIR students, especially those enrolled in the Mathematics study program.

This guest lecture exemplifies the collaborative efforts between UNAIR and UTM, aligned with the overarching goal of supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the realm of education.”
