Improvement of Junior High School Students’ Mathematical Ability through the Establishment of Mathematics Clinics at SMPN 7 Surabaya
Opening of the Mathematics Clinic Workshop at SMPN 7 Surabaya
Student Mathematics Ability Diagnosis Test, SMPN 7 Surabaya
The main purpose of community service is to improve the mathematics skills of students of SMPN 7 Surabaya, in particular and Indonesian students in general through the establishment of a mathematical clinic. If the mathematics clinic at SMPN 7 Surabaya is successfully carried out, then this clinic prototype can be used as an example for the establishment of clinics for other lessons even and in other schools.
Based on the results of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) conducted on 15-year-old students in 2015, it was found that Indonesian students’ math abilities ranked 63rd out of 70 countries, far less than Vietnam in 12th and Singapore ranked first. Efforts to improve students’ mathematical abilities are not only the responsibility of the school but also the responsibility of universities, especially the Mathematics Study Program. This effort cannot be carried out partially, so it is necessary to have a special forum to think about this effort. In this community service offered a container called a math clinic. In this Mathematics Clinic, various things related to mathematics learning at school are thought out, planned, and implemented, such as how mathematics learning is carried out, how to prepare learning materials to be used, observations of students ‘mathematical abilities, remedials on students’ mathematical abilities, and enhancement of teaching teacher abilities. mathematics. In practice, the mathematics clinic performs the PDCA cycle (plan, do, check, and action) to always improve itself from the steps that have been taken.
Community service approach methods are (1) workshop formation and preparation of mathematical clinical administration, (2) learning media workshop, (3) workshop mentoring in making students’ ability observations, (4) workshops on item preparation and analysis of questions. Targdet from this Community Service activity was the establishment of a Mathematics Clinic in Surabaya 7 Junior High School with all its completeness. In addition, this clinic is expected to be used by teachers and heads as a means to conduct research, both classroom action research (CAR) and school action research (PTS). Because of the outcome of this activity in the form of the publication of the results of the research of the teacher and the principal by using a mathematics clinic as a means of research.
The results of the workshop were (1) the formation of mathematics groups with details of the main tasks and clinical SOPs, (2) two learning media based on macromedia flash 8 and thatquiz, (3) User manuals for learning media, pretest media, practice questions and post-test for thatquiz-based class 7 , (4) observation questions thatquiz-based students’ numeracy skills, (5) student ability diagnostic test results, and (6) analysis of PTS items in Grade 7 Mathematics.
